Located in the newly Renovated Historic Pillsbury Snyder Mansion in South Minneapolis, the 2118 NuWay Counseling Center Open for Business.

Minneapolis—NuWay, a 50-year-old nonprofit organization that provides extended care treatment for substance abusers headquartered and founded in the heart of the recovery community, has opened an outpatient facility in the historic Pillsbury Snyder mansion at 2118 Blaisdell Ave. S.

The house was built in 1913 for John Pillsbury Snyder, and his wife Nelle, who had survived the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. He was the grandson of John S. Pillsbury, former governor and co-founder of the Pillsbury Company. The couple lived in the house until the 1950s.

The opening comes after two years of community discussion and neighborhood concerns about another treatment center in the Whittier neighborhood. NuWay bought the mansion in 2014.

“We believe we have created opportunity out of roadblocks,” said David Vennes, NuWay’s executive director. “We have tried to meet the neighborhood concerns and still provide a critical service for our clients.”

Vennes noted that NuWay made the mansion an outpatient treatment center rather than residential as part of its effort to be sensitive to the community.

NuWay has embraced the historic recent designation of the mansion.

Vennes said NuWay is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars restoring and preserving the Pillsbury Snyder mansion including its spectacular grand staircase, priceless woodwork and unique flooring.

“We are humbled because we get to help people in such a historic place,” said Monique Bourgeois, NuWay’s community relations director. “We are trying to create a place of wellness.”

In its mission and historic preservation efforts, NuWay has the support of two of the grandchildren of the original owners of the Pillsbury Snyder mansion, Bourgeois said.

About 200 people recovering from substance use and mental health disorders will receive out-patient treatment on a daily basis.

The new treatment center replaces another center that was located nearby.

NuWay will hold its annual picnic at the mansion grounds from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10. The community is invited.

“This has been a long and complicated process, but at the end of the day we have tried to balance community concerns with the well-being of our clients, who are also members of the community,” Vennes said. “With this great house, I believe we are off to a good start.”
